Is this fund right for a cautious, first-time investor?

The report closes with a balanced read of the evidence: three strengths and one caution.

Pros

  1. Steady compounding. 11.6% a year with 4.2% volatility; Sharpe ratio 1.68 beats 69% of its 207 Relative Value peers, and its return ranks 42nd of 208.
  2. Real alpha. The Lasso replication finds 9.4% a year of alpha with t = 4.30; the factor exposures account for only 1.7% a year.
  3. Holds up when equities fall. Beta to the S&P 500 is 0.14. In the Iran War months (Jan to Mar 2026) it made +0.8% while the S&P 500 fell 4.6%, and it averaged +0.45% in the 13 down months of the S&P 500.

Con

A softer patch and incomplete fee data. The fund has lost 2.3% since July 2026 and is still below its June peak. Only the 20% performance fee is recorded, so the estimated 2.9% a year in fees leaves out any management fee or pass-through expenses. Minimum and subscription terms are not recorded, and redemptions are quarterly.

ETF replication

Factor alpha: how much of the return is skill?

A two-step Lasso replicates the fund with factor proxies. What the factors cannot explain is alpha.

How the two-step Lasso works

Step 1: Lasso (LassoCV, 10-fold time-series cross-validation, standardised factors, intercept not penalised) on the 16 factors of the connector's "lasso factors" set with complete data. It kept Commodity momentum (AltERS), Commodity short volatility (AltERS), Fixed-income carry (AltERS), Fixed-income trend (AltERS), FX carry (AltERS), FX trend (AltERS), Treasury 7 to 10y, Commodities (GSCI roll), Micro-cap and S&P 500.

Step 2: OLS with intercept on the kept factors plus the S&P 500, which is always kept, then backward elimination until every non-forced factor has p < 0.05 (dropped: Fixed-income carry p=0.99, Commodity short volatility p=0.87, Commodity momentum p=0.83, Fixed-income trend p=0.21, Treasury 7 to 10y p=0.20, Micro-cap p=0.26). ETF replica = Σβ̂·F; replication = α̂ + Σβ̂·F; annual alpha = α̂ × 12.

Growth of 100: fund, replication and ETF replica

Growth of 100 for the fund, the replication and the ETF replica
Reading the result. 36 monthly observations against 16 candidate factors. Step 1 kept 10; step 2 left FX carry (β 0.35, p 0.030), FX trend (β 0.27, p 0.013), commodities (β -0.10, p 0.003) and the S&P 500 (β 0.13, p 0.005). The annual alpha of 9.4% has t = 4.30 and is statistically different from zero. The ETF replica alone returned 1.7% a year of the fund's 11.6% (R² 0.53): almost all of the return is not explained by the factors.

Basis of calculation

Gross return = net annualized return ÷ (1 - performance fee) + management fee; total fee = gross return × performance fee + management fee (performance fee = 0 when net return ≤ 0). Fee coverage ratio = annual alpha (2-step Lasso) ÷ total fee. Fund: 11.61% ÷ 0.80 + 0% = 14.51% gross; 14.51% × 20% + 0% = 2.90% total fee.

The peer row "Jensen alpha ÷ total fee" uses Jensen alpha = ret - [4.50% + β × (S&P 500 21.29% - 4.50%)] for every fund including the fund shown here (β 0.14, Jensen alpha 4.71%); rank 1 = highest coverage. Fees for the fund (0.00% / 20%): performance fee 20% from the connector; management fee not recorded, taken as 0%. Two peers with blank fee fields were excluded.

FAQ

Questions about this report

What is this hedge fund analysis report?
It is an example of the output produced when an AI assistant is connected to AlternativeSoft MCP. It covers performance, risk, drawdowns, peer-group ranking, factor-based alpha, fees and a plain-English verdict on one multi-strategy hedge fund.
Which hedge fund is it?
The fund name is withheld. This page uses an anonymised example so you can see the structure and depth of the analysis without a named fund.
Where do the numbers come from?
All statistics, regressions and derived figures are computed from the monthly return series returned by the AlternativeSoft connector, for the 36 months from October 2023 to September 2026, against the HFRI Relative Value (Total) Index and the S&P 500.
What is the two-step Lasso replication?
Step 1 uses a Lasso regression with 10-fold time-series cross-validation to select which of 16 candidate factors matter. Step 2 runs an OLS regression on the selected factors, always keeping the S&P 500, and removes factors that are not significant at 5%. The intercept is the fund's annual alpha, here 9.42% with a t-statistic of 4.30.
Can I run the same analysis on my own funds?
