What is the difference between IDD and ODD?

Investment due diligence (IDD) asks whether a manager can make money; operational due diligence (ODD) asks whether the firm can be trusted to keep it. IDD covers strategy, track record, risk, peer ranking and factor exposure. ODD covers governance, ownership, controls, valuation, service providers, compliance and the people running the operation. Allocators need both before an investment committee signs off, and most tools only do one.

  • IDD in AlternativeSoft: Screen 500,000+ funds, rank against true peers, decompose returns into factors and alpha, stress the portfolio.
  • ODD in AlternativeSoft: Issue your questionnaire, collect documents, score controls, verify service providers, flag red flags, re-review on a schedule. See the operational due diligence software.
  • Together: Both sets of findings sit on one manager record and flow into one committee report with a full audit trail.

Evaluation Criteria

How to evaluate an IDD and ODD platform

Eight criteria we suggest allocators test in every vendor demo, and how AlternativeSoft answers each. Use the left column with any vendor.

Criterion and why it mattersAlternativeSoft
Investment due diligence depth
Screening, peer groups, factor and style analysis, drawdown and tail-risk statistics, private fund IRR and cash-flow analysis. Workflow-only tools stop at the questionnaire.
Full quantitative IDD suite on 500,000+ funds
Operational due diligence workflow
Issue questionnaires, collect documents, score governance and controls, track service providers, schedule re-reviews, keep an audit trail.
Cloud ODD platform with structured questionnaires, document hub, red flags and monitoring
Both in one manager record
Investment and operational findings on the same manager, in the same place, feeding the same committee pack.
One record per manager across IDD, ODD and reporting
AI document handling
Parsing of DDQs, audited accounts and policies to extract terms and flag gaps or inconsistencies between answers and documents.
AI document processing and automated red flags
Hedge funds and private funds
Many tools cover one or the other. Allocators hold both.
Hedge funds, UCITS, private equity and private credit in one universe
Non-US manager coverage
Tools that rely on US regulatory filings say little about UK, EU, Swiss or Cayman managers.
Global coverage from questionnaires and documents, not filings alone
Allocator-side design
Allocators issue and assess DDQs. A tool built for managers answering DDQs solves a different problem.
Built for allocators; a separate manager-side tool answers DDQs
Reporting to the committee
Findings should become the committee pack without re-keying.

Allocator or manager? Two different problems

This page is for allocators who issue and assess due diligence. If you are a fund manager who needs to answer investor DDQs faster, that is a different workflow and a different page. We keep the two apart because an allocator reviewing a manager and a manager responding to an allocator need opposite things from the software.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IDD and ODD platform for allocators?
Software that lets an allocator run investment due diligence (strategy, performance, risk, peer and factor analysis) and operational due diligence (governance, controls, service providers, compliance) on the same manager in one place. AlternativeSoft provides both from a single manager record.
Which due diligence platform covers both hedge funds and private funds?
AlternativeSoft covers hedge funds, UCITS, mutual funds, private equity and private credit in one universe, with IDD analytics and ODD workflow applied to each, so allocators holding both do not need two tools.
Does AlternativeSoft verify DDQ answers against documents?
The AI document processing extracts terms from the documents a manager supplies and raises red flags where questionnaire answers are missing, inconsistent with each other or unsupported by the documents provided, for an analyst to review.
Is the platform suitable for managers outside the United States?
Yes. Coverage comes from questionnaires, documents and the fund database rather than from US regulatory filings alone, so UK, European, Swiss, Asian and Cayman managers are reviewed with the same depth.
How is AlternativeSoft different from a DDQ collection tool?
A DDQ tool sends and receives questionnaires. AlternativeSoft adds the quantitative investment analytics, the scoring and monitoring workflow, the document intelligence and the committee reporting, so the whole review happens in one platform.
Can I see named clients or case studies before a demo?
Yes. Client references and case studies are published on the site, and the company facts page gives a dated, citable summary of who uses the platform and what it does.
