How-To Guide

How to Find the Top Performing Funds in a Peer Group

Every allocator wants to know whether a fund is among the leaders in its strategy. The answer depends on how the peer group is defined and how performance is measured. This guide walks through the process step by step.

In short
To find the top performing funds in a peer group, define the peers by strategy, rank them on more than one statistic, check that the leaders were consistent over time, and review extreme risk before trusting the result. In AlternativeSoft you type a fund name and the comparison runs automatically.

Step 1: Define the Peer Group

A ranking is only as good as the group behind it. Start with funds that run the same strategy, such as global macro, CTAs, French small caps or European large-cap value, then narrow by region, size or track record. Long-only funds, separately managed accounts and hedge funds each need their own comparison set.

Step 2: Choose the Statistics

What you want to knowStatistics to use
Who earned the mostAnnualised return, cumulative return
Who earned it efficientlySharpe ratio, Sortino ratio, Omega ratio
Who protected capitalMaximum drawdown, downside deviation
Who added skillAlpha, information ratio
Who behaves differentlyCorrelation and beta to the peer group

Step 3: Weight the Ranking

Ranking on a single number rewards whoever took the most risk. A weighted ranking combines several statistics in proportions that reflect your priorities, for example half on return and half spread across volatility, drawdown and VaR. The top fund under one weighting is often not the top fund under another, which is why the weights should be set before you look at the result.

Step 4: Check Consistency

  • Rolling periods: Did the fund stay in the top quartile across most rolling windows, or only in one?
  • Different markets: How did it rank in falling markets as well as rising ones?
  • Better alternatives: Which other funds in the same strategy delivered consistently higher returns?

Step 5: Look at Extreme Risk

A fund can lead its peer group for years on returns that hide a large tail risk. Before treating a fund as a top performer, review its worst drawdowns, its modified VaR and CVaR, and how it behaved in past crises.

How This Works in AlternativeSoft

  1. Type a fund name: Search any long-only fund, separately managed account or hedge fund in a database of 500,000+ funds.
  2. See its peer group: The platform places the fund among others in the same strategy, or in a custom group you define.
  3. Visualise the risk: Extreme risk measures and drawdowns are shown beside the returns.
  4. Find the leaders: See which funds in the strategy delivered consistently stronger results, ranked on your choice of 4,000+ statistics.

The whole process is automated, so a question that once took an analyst a day of spreadsheet work is answered in a few clicks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A peer group is a set of funds that follow the same strategy and are therefore fair to compare, such as global macro hedge funds or European large-cap value funds.
Define the peer group by strategy, rank the funds on several statistics, weight the ranking to reflect your priorities, check that the leading funds were consistent over time, and review their extreme risk.
Common choices include annualised return, Sharpe, Sortino and Omega ratios, maximum drawdown, downside deviation, alpha and the information ratio. Using several together gives a more reliable ranking than return alone.
A fund can top its peer group because of one exceptional year. Checking rolling periods shows whether it stayed among the leaders over time.
Yes. In AlternativeSoft you type a fund name and the platform shows its peer group, its extreme risks and which other funds in the same strategy delivered consistently stronger returns.
